About Us
The Hong Kong Children’s Musical Theatre (HKCMT) is a registered non-profit charitable organization and the first — and only — musical theatre troupe in Hong Kong built around children and youth. HKCMT is dedicated to providing diverse arts education for children and teens aged 3 to 17.
Founded in 1998 by Ms. Ada Wong, JP and Founding Artistic Director Dr. Justine Woo Po-sau, HKCMT integrates the philosophy of “holistic education through the arts” into its musical theatre curriculum. Through artistic expression and stage performances, children of different personalities develop essential growth elements such as empathy, communication, body awareness, and social coordination—helping them understand themselves, unlock their unique potential, and build strong values.
Each year, HKCMT stages large-scale musicals and diverse performances. Starting in 2024, the troupe is expanding into cross-media local creations, using adapted picture books written by local young artists as the core of its annual productions. These adaptations transform short 32-page stories into vivid, interactive live musicals that blend singing, acting, and movements, encouraging young performers and audiences alike to explore new perspectives of the world and themselves.
In 2024, 111 young performers aged 4 to 17 brought to life the adapted musical The Happy Frame, based on a local picture book. The production incorporated inclusive art elements, including a song-and-dance segment performed in sign language. The show received an enthusiastic response, selling 96% of tickets across six shows with an additional show to meet the overwhelming response. It was featured in Ming Pao, Ming Pao Weekly, Commercial Radio 2’s Kiss Kiss Kids (60-minute interview), and Zine (25-minute feature).
Past productions include the CMT×MYO 25th Anniversary Musical Concert Träumerei, The Little Prince (with music direction by Peter Kam and art direction by Yee Chung-man), the parent-children co-created musical Year 2013: Romeo & Juliet 2.0, and the multimedia musical A Big Melon’s Tour of Hong Kong in collaboration with Zuni Icosahedron to name just a few. From 2018 to 2022, HKCMT was a venue partner of Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
